We arrived in Hard Luck the following morning. Liam carried all of my luggage to my small cabin close to the school. He took me to meet Abbey and the others on the school board and then to dinner at a small café where the food was delicious. I’d never eaten moose before and found it as flavorful as beef.

My first week in the classroom, three bouquets of wildflowers were set on my desk. Liam had walked me to school, and when he saw the wildflowers, he snorted, took them with him, and left.

After school, he assured me I wouldn’t be troubled by those three men again. That very night, he took me to a reading at the library and from the comments I overheard, this wasn’t an event he usually attended. He held my hand when he walked me home. After a week of his attention, no other single men in town sought me out. We continued the charade and Liam kissed me when we knew we had an audience. To my surprise he was a good kisser. I found myself thinking about Liam more than I remembered my time with Chet.

Hard Luck was everything Abbey had said. I settled in and was surprised by how quickly I was able to adjust to life above the Arctic Circle. While the weather was considerably colder than anything I’d experienced, the community was warm and welcoming. My students, while typical teenagers, were sincere about wanting to learn. It was a joy to be their teacher. I made friends with Dorie, the second teacher who was married to one of Liam’s cousins. The adjustment wasn’t nearly as difficult, although daylight faded quickly as the temperatures dropped.

I saw Liam nearly every day. He took pride in showing me the beauty of the Northern Lights. The dark purple and gold streaks of colors that flashed across the sky like whirling paints were awe inspiring. I was convinced I’d never grow tired seeing them, especially if Liam was there to share the beauty with me.

I had to admit that a big part of the smooth transition to my life in Hard Luck was due to Liam. Then, after a couple of months of us seeing each other on a regular basis, he told me he’d be leaving for a short while. He didn’t say where he was headed or how long he’d be gone. I wanted to ask and would have, if it’d been my business.

I’d started to make friends with the other women in town, most of whom were married and had started families. After Liam left, I learned how surprised they were at how attentive he was to me. They’d never seen him pay so much attention to a woman in town before. I hadn’t considered that my proposition might make him the subject of unusual speculation, but I knew it would all be over soon. He’d more than helped me adjust to my situation without having to deal with the attentions of
